In a 2025 head-to-head study presented at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) annual meeting, patients who had a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass lost about five times more weight than patients on GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide. Over two years, surgery patients lost an average of 58 pounds (24% of body weight) versus 12 pounds (4.7%) for those on GLP-1 medication (ASMBS, 2025).
