I went to Nordorthopaedics for a full hip replacement on November 21, 2024. Like so many people in Alberta, I was in immediate need of surgery (totally bone-on-bone for over a year) and could not wait another 3 years to have my surgery done in Calgary.
After suggestions from my sports medicine doctor to go to Lithuania, I made the decision to go to Nordorthopaedics for my surgery and it has turned out to be one of the best decisions I have every made. From the initial communication with Nord to the accommodation in the Nord apartments to the surgery itself and the physio afterwards, the process has been nothing less than exemplary.
My initial contact with Nord began in mid-August. My service representative was Agne Celkaite and she was the perfect ambassador for the company. Her professionalism and timely responses to my multitude of questions and concerns was very reassuring to me and gave me the confidence I needed to proceed with my journey. So, kudos to you Agne!
My wife and I were met in Vilnius by a member of the logistics team as promised and taken directly to the Nord Clinic in Kaunas where I had my x-ray and bloodwork done and filled out some forms. Everything proceeded quickly and efficiently. I was then brought to the Nord apartments which we had reserved from November 18th to December 7th. The apartments are spacious and well set up for patients just out of surgery. There is a small kitchen with a freezer for my ice packs which is very important. There is a large TV with Netflix which I needed during my recuperation and laundry facilities which allowed us to travel more lightly. There are also nurses that will check up on you every day. They were all very friendly and accommodating and it was reassuring to know that there was help nearby if you needed it. I could have had my surgery done a month earlier, but waited so I could coordinate it with the availability of an apartment.
On the day of surgery, I met with the surgeon and anesthetist and their demeanor gave me confidence that the surgery would be a great success, and it was. Physio started within 2 days of surgery and I booked 10 sessions which helped greatly with my recovery process. Within 6 days of surgery, I was doing 7 km on the stationary bike and was walking 2-3 km around town without crutches. I was quite fit going into surgery, so I believe this aided in a speedy recovery.
We are now back in Calgary for a week and I am going to our little gym daily for my self physio. I hope to be playing pickleball again in 2 months.
I would like to thank everyone involved in Nordorthopaedics for the opportunity to have my surgery done there and for helping me realize my journey which has been a success on every level.
P.S. There is a Northorthopaedics Facebook group, which is helpful for all kinds of information.
